In evaluating Cyre as a football tackle, writers for Gonzaga Publications ranged from understated to enthusiastic. A 1924 yearbook editor noted “the opposition always met with difficulty when they directed a play over Hec’s tackle.” A student newspaper writer, selecting an all-time Gonzaga team several years later, placed the Yakima, Wash., player on the first 11 and described Cyre as “a great, aggressive tackle, one of the greatest if not the greatest from Gonzaga. Loved contact and tough blocking assignments.” In four varsity seasons, Cyre was on the splendid 1922 team that met West Virginia in a Christmas Day postseason game and the undefeated 1924 squad that outscored opponents 138-26. Like many Gonzaga players of that era, Cyre easily made the move from the collegiate game into the young National Football League. He played with the Green Bay Packers and fellow Gonzaga alum Ivan “Tiny” Cahoon in 1926-27, and with the New York Yankees in 1928.
