Tom Gorman pitched his Woodburn High School team to an Oregon state championship, but arrived at Gonzaga in 1976 to no fanfare. Unrecruited and unappreciated as a freshman, the 6-4 left-hander became one of the great “walk-on” performers in GU history. In his final three seasons, Gorman pitched seven shutouts and a no-hitter among 26 victories. He helped pitch Gonzaga into the national rankings, to two Northern Pacific Conference championships and the NCAA regionals in 1978 and 1980. In the 1980 regionals, he earned two wins over Cal State-Fullerton, defending national champion, before Gonzaga lost to Arizona, College World Series winner that year. During eight professional seasons, he pitched for four major league teams, most notably the New York Mets with whom he had a 6-0 record and a 2.97 earned run average, all in relief, in 1984.
