Gonzaga Varsity Crew Wins Head Of The Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University's varsity men's and women's crew opened the 2000 fall racing season with victories in the Head of the Spokane Regatta, contested Saturday morning on the Spokane River.
The varsity men's eight moved past the field to win the opening flight with a time of 16:02 on the 5,000 meter course. Pacific Lutheran followed behind in second and Puget Sound was third. In the varsity women's eight race, Gonzaga rowed a solid time of 18:18 to win their flight by nearly a minute. For both teams it was their first competitive race of the season with new teams as both crews had to replace a number of veteran senior rowers following last season.
In other race action Pacific Lutheran's varsity men's four and the Gonzaga varsity women's four were victorious in their races. Gonzaga will return to action next Saturday with a head race against Washington State University.
