SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's and women's crew will open the 2002 fall racing season on Saturday morning as they host the Head of the Spokane Regatta. Racing will start at 9 a.m. with varsity eight men's competition featuring Gonzaga, Pacific Lutheran and Washington State. Varsity eight women's competition will include Gonzaga and Pacific Lutheran.
Due to construction on the Argonne Street brigde, this year's racing format will be different as the varsity boats will start racing just west of the Argonne Street Bridge in a time trial heat. Varsity boats will then race a second heat in a chase format with each boat starting at an interval based on its time trial score. Men's and women's novice eights from Gonzaga and the Coeur d'Alene Rowing club will follow varsity competition in a time trial format only.
Fans are encouraged to watch the racing action from Boulder Beach along Upriver Drive or from the finish line at the Gonzaga Boat House. Gonzaga will return to racing action in two weeks as they host Washington State in a fall dual regatta at the Gonzaga Boat House.
