GU Men, WSU Women Win Saturday Crew Regatta

SPOKANE, Wash. - In the final home fall regatta of the season Gonzaga University's men's varsity eight dominated Saturday mornings dual race against Washington State University at the Gonzaga Boat House on the Spokane River. Washington State's varsity women's eight finished first in the women's race with Gonzaga's varsity women finishing second.

The racing format consisted of two heats down the 3,500 meter course with the first heat consisting of head-to-head racing and the second heat a chase format. Gonzaga's varsity men covered the combined distance of 7,000 meters in 20:36 with two solid runs of 10:15 and 10:21. Gonzaga's JV men's eight finished second and Washington State's varsity eight finished third.

In the women's race Washington State's varsity eight held off Gonzaga by eight seconds in the first heat before putting some distance between the two crews in the second race. WSU finished at 22:48 with Gonzaga's varsity eight second at 23:12. WSU's JV and third varsity eight finished third and fourth with Gonzaga's JV fifth.

In novice women's competition Gonzaga's top novice eight won the 7,000 meter race with a 25:43. WSU's top novice boat finished at 26:59. The other novice men's and women's boats only covered the course one time. Gonzaga's composite boat of novice and second year rowers finished at 11:43 while WSU's novice boat was second at 11:47. Gonzaga's second and third novice boats finished first and second in the women's 3,500 meter race.
