Women's Crew Second At Avaya Collegiate Championships

PRINCETON, NJ - Gonzaga's varsity women's crew fell a half second short of winning the 2002 Avaya Collegiate Championships as Gonzaga was nosed out by Holy Cross in Sunday's Grand Final at Lake Mercer in Princeton, New Jersey. The Gonzaga varsity men's crew pulled one of the fastest times of the day on the 2,000 meter course to easily win the Third Final.
Gonzaga's women finished the race in 7:06.08 as they attempted to chase down eventual champion Holy Cross. Holy Cross won the event in 7:05.57 as the top five boats finished within three seconds of each other. Ithaca finished third in the event knocking off 2001 champion Williams by 0.12 seconds. Smith finished fifth and Dayon was sixth in the event with a time of 7:18.39. Gonzaga's varsity boat included coxswain Courtney Haase, Nicole Lustig, Molly Gulsvig, Cynthia Savoca, Breah Neimiec, Jennie Gilpin, Maria Bokulich, Bridget Troy and Christine McKeown.
After not rowing well during Saturday's heat race, Gonzaga's varsity men turned in one of the best performances of the day on Sunday as they coasted to victory in the Third Final. Gonzaga won the race in a time of 6:19.30, six seconds ahead of second place Holy Cross. Bates and New Hampshire followed in third and fourth while Rochester and UC San Diego rounded out the Third Final. Gonzaga's time of 6:19.30 was faster than the winner of the Petite Final, as Ohio State won that event with a time of 6:20.86. Marist won the Grand Final race in 5:59.79. Gonzaga's varsity men's boat included coxswain Mara Oblak, Mark Voorhees, Mike Baisch, Brad Hughes, Jeff Kiely, Dave Johnson, Justin Toenes, Nat Hopper, and Nathan Wilson.
