Crew Wins Dual Regatta With Washington State

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University crew opened its fall racing season with two varsity 8+ victories over rival Washington State University during their dual regatta on a crystal clear Saturday morning on the Spokane River. The Gonzaga varsity women won the 7,000 meter event by five seconds over the Cougars while the Bulldog varsity men won their 3,500 meter event by 26 seconds over Washington State. Gonzaga won all three men's events while Washington State won three of the five women's races despite losing the varsity eight.
Gonzaga's women's varsity eight covered the 7,000 meter course in 23:52 to finish just five seconds ahead of Washington State, knocking off the Cougars women's crew team for the first time. The WSU women's junior varsity eight posted the best time of the day with a 23:35 to easily win the three boat second varsity eight race. Gonzaga also won the women's varsity four's with a time of 12:50, six seconds ahead of Washington State's second varsity four and eight seconds ahead of the Cougars top varsity four boat. Washington State won the day with a victory in the women's novice eight. WSU posted a time of 25:59 to win by 25 seconds over Gonzaga.
On the men's side, Gonzaga swept all three events to continue their dominance over the Cougars men's crews. Gonzaga covered the 3,500 meter course in 10:29 to easily outdistance Washington State's time of 10:55. The Bulldogs novice eight claimed a five-second victory over Washington State in the first racing action for the novice squads. Gonzaga rowed a time of 11:22 with Washington State's top novice boat coming in at 11:27. The remaining novice boats finished close to a minute behind the front running crews. In the men's varsity fours, Gonzaga pulled a time of 11:36 to win by seven seconds over Washington State.
The dual meet was held on the Spokane River on a 3,500 meter course in a head race format. Each boat starts at a timed interval and results are based on time comparisons on the course. The women's 7,000 meter event consisted of two 3,500 pieces down the course in front of the Gonzaga Boathouse. The Bulldogs will host the Head of the Spokane Regatta next weekend on the same 3,500 meter course.
