Varsity Eight Finishes 3rd At Head Of The Snake

PULLMAN, Wash. - Gonzaga University and Washington State University each won one varsity eight race on Friday afternoon as the two schools competed in the 5,000 meter Head of the Snake Regatta at Wawawai Landing outside of Pullman, Wash. Gonzaga won the men's varsity eight race while the Cougars captured the women's varsity eight race. The Bulldogs will wrap up their fall racing season next Sunday, Nov. 9, when they compete at the Head of the Lake Regatta at Montlake Cut in Seattle.
The Bulldogs men varsity eight won the rubber match between the two schools as Gonzaga captured the regatta in a time of 16:28.24. They edged the Cougars varsity eight by five seconds as WSU finished at 16:33.08. Gonzaga had defeated WSU by 25 seconds two weeks ago in a dual race. Last week the Cougars shocked Gonzaga with a two second win during the Head of the Spokane Regatta.
In the women's varsity eight, Washington State won the race with a time of 17:43 with the Cougars second varsity eight rowing a time of 18:01 to finish second. Gonzaga's varsity eight was one second behind at 18:02. WSU's third varsity eight was fourth more than a minute behind at 19:06. The victory for the Cougars evened the season series between the two schools after Gonzaga knocked off Washington State two weeks ago in a dual race.
Gonzaga's novice men and women also raced in a time trial format with different pieces, no official times were recorded for those boats.
