Women's Golfer Qualifies For Boston Marathon

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University senior women's golfer Cathy Knutson has excelled at another sport as the native of Mora, Minn., has qualified for the 2004 Boston Marathon which will be held on April 19. Knutson qualified for the 2004 event after running in Sunday's Seattle Marathon. Knutson finished the event in 40th place with a time of 3 hours, 35 minutes and 40 seconds which was four minutes under the qualifying standards set by the Boston Marathon. Knutson also finished ninth for her age division out of 88 total entries.
Gonzaga's athletic department also had a qualifier for the Boston Marathon as Kyle Pifer, a graduate assistant in the academics/compliance, qualified with a time of 3 hours, 7 minutes which was three minutes under the qualifying standards for his section. Pifer, a native of Frankfort, Ind., is in his first year with the Gonzaga athletic department after graduating from Francis-Marion University in 1999 and working in the private sector for the past four years.
Knutson and Pifer will each have the option of competing in the 2004 or 2005 event as their qualifying times will be good for two years.
