CHENEY, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team swept the Eastern Washington Eagles 7-0 in the second day of the Eastern Washington Invitational in nearby Cheney, Wash.
The Bulldogs set the pace early as they earned the doubles point, taking all three matches. Gonzaga's No. 1 doubles team of Jamie Buterbaugh and Kendall Bates defeated Jennifer Jolley and Marie Carroll 8-2. The Bulldog duo of Sirrah Williams and Katie Rock downed Wanda Freeman and Stacie Pate 8-4 in No. 2 action while Connie Head and Aaryn Volkmann beat Aki Tsuchiya and Leanna Mehren 8-1 in the final doubles match.
In No. 1 singles action Jamie Buterbaugh defeated Jennifer Jolley in straight sets 6-2, 6-0. GU's Kendall Bates dominated the No. 2 match as she downed Marie Carroll 6-1, 6-1.
Wanda Freeman forced Aaryn Volkmann into three sets before Volkmann won 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. Katie Rock took the No. 4 match 6-4,6-0 while Sirrah Williams went three sets to end with the 6-3,1-6,5-7 win in the No. 5 position. Connie Head won the final point for the Zags as she defeated Lesley Liddell 6-4,6-1 in No. 6 singles.
The Bulldogs return to action Friday against the University of Idaho at the Spokane Racket Club at 3 p.m.
