SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University's men's and women's varsity crew will travel to California this weekend to compete in the first West Coast Conference Challenge in Redwood. The two-day event includes crews from Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount University, Saint Mary's College, University of San Diego, Santa Clara University and Sacramento State University. Both days of competition will include various dual races between the participating schools.
Gonzaga's men and women will open the competition on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. as the Bulldogs race against San Diego. Gonzaga returns for its second competition of the day at 3:15 when the Bulldogs will face Sacramento State. The men and women will each face a different opponent on Sunday morning as the GU men's Varsity 8 takes on Santa Clara at 11:15 a.m. followed by the GU women's Varsity 8 racing Loyola Marymount.
This is the first event of this nature for WCC schools and will give each crew an idea of where the other league schools stand. The West Coast Conference Rowing Championships take place on Friday, May 2 at Lake Natoma outside of Sacramento. Gonzaga's women have won all six previous WCC Championships while the Bulldog men claimed the first unofficial WCC Championship last season.
Gonzaga returns home next week to face Washington State University in the annual Fawley Cup Regatta at Silver Lake outside of Spokane. It will be the final home regatta of the season for the Bulldogs who split with the University of British Columbia last weekend.
