REDWOOD, Calif. - Gonzaga University men's and women's varsity crew dominated day one action of the first annual WCC Challenge at Redwood Shores in California. Gonzaga defeated the University of San Diego in the morning session before dispatching of Sacramento State University in the afternoon session. The event features the five West Coast Conference schools that offer crew (Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, Saint Mary's San Diego, Santa Clara) and Sacramento State with each school racing in a dual race action with other schools.
In the morning Gonzaga's women had a strong start as they easily won the 2,000 meter race against their top competition from the WCC the last couple of seasons. The Bulldogs pulled a time of 7:30.7 to win the race over San Diego by nearly 11 seconds as the Toreros finished at 7:41.3. Gonzaga has won six consecutive WCC Rowing championships with San Diego finishing as the runner-up in five of those six seasons.
The Gonzaga men had a strong showing as they opened the racing day with a three second victory over San Diego. The men's team made a late move with 500 meters remaining to win the dual in 6:42.5. San Diego finished with a time of 6:45.2.
The afternoon proved to be even better for the Bulldogs as the varsity men pulled a time of 6:43.2 to grab a 15 second victory over Sacramento State.
