REDWOOD, Calif. - The Gonzaga University men's and women's varsity crew finished off the first WCC Challenge by easily winning their final races on Sunday morning to improve to 3-0 during the event at Redwood Shores in California. Both teams had ideal racing conditions on the 2,000 meter course as they had a slight tail wind to carry both squads to victory.
Gonzaga's men collected their best time of the weekend as they pulled a 6:05.7 to blow past Santa Clara which finished with a time of 6:14.1. The Broncos were Gonzaga's top competition last season when the WCC men's rowing programs competed for the unofficial WCC championship, the Bulldogs winning that race by four seconds. The men's varsity 8 consisted of coxswain Elaine Parry, Mark Voorhees, Pat Haffey, Connor Barry, Nathan Wilson, Ben Foley, Jeff Kiely, Brad Hughes and Mike Baisch. During the two-day event Gonzaga defeated San Diego, Sacramento State and Santa Clara.
Gonzaga's varsity women also pulled their best time of the weekend as the Bulldogs jumped out to a quick start and never looked back with a time of 6:56.9. Gonzaga defeated WCC foe Loyola Marymount which finished 12 seconds behind at 7:08.0. The Lions are considered one of the top WCC teams to challenge Gonzaga at this year's WCC Championships which the Bulldogs have won six consecutive years. Gonzaga's women's varsity 8 consisted of coxswain Courtney Haase, Cynthia Savoca, Maria Bokulich, Renee Holl, Jenifer Gehlsen, Breah Neimiec, Karen O'Hagan, Kristi Aamodt, and Bridget Troy. During the two-dya event Gonzaga defeated San Diego, Sacramento State and Loyola Marymount.
The two-day event consisted of the five WCC schools (Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, Saint Mary's, San Diego and Santa Clara) that offer rowing and Sacramento State. Each race was a dual race with schools getting a minimum of three races in the event.
Gonzaga will return home to host Washington State next weekend in the annual Fawley Cup. The regatta will take place at Silver Lake outside of Spokane and will be the Bulldogs final home regatta of the 2003 Spring season.
