Crew Opens Spring Season This Saturday

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University men's and women's crew will open their 2003 Spring season this weekend as the Zags host the University of British Columbia on Saturday morning at Silver Lake outside of Spokane. This will be the first of two home regattas for Gonzaga with the final home event of the season coming in two weeks when Gonzaga hosts Washington State University in the annual Fawley Cup Regatta.
Saturday's regatta is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. and will consist of four races for both the men and women. Each school will enter a Varsity 8, Junior Varsity 8, Novice 8 and Varsity 4 in the competition. Start times will be subject to change for the regatta based on weather conditions on the lake.
Gonzaga is coming off a solid season in which the Gonzaga women won their sixth consecutive West Coast Conference championship and finished second at the Avaya College Championships. The Gonzaga men finished third at the WIRA Championships and advanced to the Avaya College Championships. The University of British Columbia fields one of the top rowing programs in Canada with UBC finishing second in the Canadian College Championships last season.
