Crew Spilts Opening Regatta With British Columbia

MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. - Gonzaga University crew opened its 2003 Spring season with a split of its dual regatta against the University of British Columbia. The two schools each claimed victory in four of the eight races with Gonzaga's women edging out British Columbia in the Varsity 8 race and UBC winning the men's Varsity 8 race. The race took place under ideal racing conditions at Silver Lake just outside of Spokane. The Bulldogs will hold their final home regatta of the season at Silver Lake in two weeks against Washington State in the Fawley Cup.
In the women's Varsity 8 race, the two schools were neck-and-neck down the 2,000 meter course with Gonzaga pulling away with two late strong strokes to win the race by just over 1 second. Gonzaga crossed the line at 7:02.24 while British Columbia finished at 7:03.30.
In the men's Varsity 8 race British Columbia was able to slowly move out to a lead over the length of the race course as UBC won the 2,000 meter event in 6:10.73. Gonzaga crossed the line at 6:19.81.
In other racing action on the day Gonzaga's women's JV and Novice 8 both won. The JV 8 pulled a time of 7:19.03 with the Novice pulling a 7:33.82. The UBC women won the Varsity 4's with a time of 8:01.20. In additional men's races, UBC won the Novice/JV 8 race with a time of 6:27.52 and also won the men's Varsity 4's at 6:48.38. Gonzaga won its only men's race in the Composite 8's with a time of 6;22.43.
The women's Varsity 8 consisted of coxswain Courtney Haase, Cynthia Savoca, Maria Bokulich, Renee Holl, Jenifer Gehlsen, Breah Neimiec, Karen O'Hagan, Kristi Aamodt, and Bridget Troy.
The men's Varsity 8 consisted of coxswain Elaine Parry, Mark Voorhees, Nathan Wilson, Brad Hughes, Jeff Kiely, Ben Foley, Pat Haffey, Mike Cipriano, Todd Wheeler.
Gonzaga's varsity crews will travel next week to compete in the first WCC Challenge regatta which will include head-to-head duals against other West Coast Conference schools with rowing programs and Sacramento State. The race will take place in Redwood, Calif., at Redwood Shores. Other WCC schools competing include Loyola Marymount, Saint Mary's, Santa Clara and San Diego.
