SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University crew will return to action this weekend as they face Western Washington University in their annual dual regatta. The event will take place at Lake Stevens just outside of Everett, Wash. on Saturday morning with the first race scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
The Gonzaga men's varsity eight is coming off its title at the Cal Cup regatta at the San Diego Crew Classic two weeks ago. Western Washington also advanced to the Grand Final of the Cal Cup finishing in fifth with at time of 6:23.85, nearly seven seconds behind Gonzaga's winning time of 6:16.8. The two schools could meet a third time later this season as both are scheduled to compete in the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA's) Regatta on May 3-4 at Lake Natoma outside of Sacramento, Calif.
The Gonzaga men's varsity eight will consist of coxswain Elaine Parry, Mark Voorhees, Pat Haffey, Connor Barry, Nathan Wilson, Ben Foley, Jeff Keily, Brad Hughes and Mike Baisch.
The Gonzaga women's varsity eight is coming off a sixth place finish in the Cal Cup Grand Final at the San Diego Crew Classic. This will be the first meeting of the season between the two crews. Last year in Spokane, Gonzaga's varsity eight caught a crab with about 15 strokes remaining in the race and held on for a three second victory over Western Washington. The Bulldogs would win six of seven races during that regatta.
The Gonzaga women's varsity eight will consist of coxswain Courtney Haase, Cynthia Savoca, Maria Bokulich, Renee Holl, Jenifer Gehlsen, Breah Neimiec, Karen O'Hagan, Kristi Aamodt and Bridget Troy.
In addition to the two varsity eight races, eight other races will take place including junior varsity eight's, novice eight's, varsity and novice fours. The women's varsity four is the first race of the day at 9:30 a.m. with racing scheduled to end at 11:40 a.m. with the men's varsity four.
The races will launch from the North Cove of Lake Stevens. To reach the race course from I-5 north- or southbound, go east on the US 2 exit, then north on Hwy 204 and then north on SR 9 (at the Frontier Village Shopping Center). At the next light, turn east on Lundeen Parkway and follow the lake shore. At the stop sign, keep right onto Vernon Road, which turns into N. Lakeshore Drive. At the next stop sign, turn right onto 124th/Main, then turn right again onto 17th, which will lead you to the dock.
