Crew Dominates Dual Regatta With Western Washington

LAKE STEVENS, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's and women's crew dominated racing action on Saturday morning as the Bulldogs won eight of nine races against Western Washington University during their dual regatta at the North Cove of Lake Stevens. Gonzaga won seven of their eight races by over eight seconds with the only WWU victory coming in the women's varsity four.
In the two featured races of the day Gonzaga won both the men's and women's varsity eight races. The Bulldog men pulled out to an early lead and kept up the pace over the 2,000 meter course as they finished with a time of 6:13.8. Western Washington finished in 6:22.4. Gonzaga's varsity women also set the race tone early on as they pulled away at the half way point of the race for a time of 7:00.4. Western Washington finished in 7:11.2.
The Gonzaga men's varsity eight will consist of coxswain Elaine Parry, Mark Voorhees, Pat Haffey, Connor Barry, Nathan Wilson, Ben Foley, Jeff Kiely, Brad Hughes and Mike Baisch. The Gonzaga women's varsity eight will consist of coxswain Courtney Haase, Cynthia Savoca, Maria Bokulich, Renee Holl, Jenifer Gehlsen, Breah Neimiec, Karen O'Hagan, Kristi Aamodt and Bridget Troy.
In other racing action Gonzaga's men's junior varsity eight covered the course in a time of 6:33.4 for a nearly 20 second victory over Western Washington at 6:52.1 The women's junior varsity eight also garnered victory for Gonzaga with a time of 7:11.2, Western Washington finished 18 seconds behind at 7:29.7. In women's novice action Gonzaga's eight won the race in a time of 7:28.9 with WWU's top novice boat coming in at 7:36.8 and the Vikings second novice eight finishing at 8:09.0.
In four's racing action Gonzaga won the men's varsity and junior varsity four's. Gonzaga's top varsity four finished at 7:01.3 nosing out the second Bulldogs varsity four at 7:02.0. The men's junior varsity four was won by Gonzaga in a time of 7:16.8. The women's varsity four was the only race won by Western Washington with a time of 7:32.2, five seconds ahead of Gonzaga at 7:37.2. The women's second novice four race was won by Gonzaga in a time of 8:55.2
The Bulldogs return to racing action in two weeks as Gonzaga heads to the West Coast Conference championships on May 2 and the WIRA championships on May 3-4. Gonzaga's women are in search of their seventh straight WCC crown and second straight WIRA championship. The Gonzaga men won last year's unofficial WCC championship and are back to defend that title before racing in the WIRA's.
