Varsity Crews Head To San Diego Crew Classic

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University varsity crew will travel to San Diego this weekend to compete in the annual San Diego Crew Classic at Mission Bay. Both Gonzaga crews have been seeded number one in their respective Saturday heats with the top two boats in each heat advancing to Sunday's Cal Cup Grand Final. Other boats will be placed in the Petite Final or Third Final based on their Saturday heat finish. Gonzaga's men placed fifth in last year's Cal Cup Grand Final while the women brought home a sixth place Grand Final finish.
Gonzaga's men will draw Minnesota, Notre Dame, San Diego State, UC Irvine, Hobart and Cal Maritime in their heat which is the second race of the day at 7:10 a.m. The varsity eight consists of coxswain Elaine Parry, Mark Voorhees, Pat Haffey, Connor Barry, Nathan Wilson, Ben Foley, Jeff Kiely, Brad Hughes and Mike Baisch. Western Washington and defending champion Orange Coast College earned No. 1 seeds in the other two Cal Cup heat races.
Gonzaga's women will face off against Miami (Fla.), Purdue, UC Santa Barbara, Saint Joseph's, Orange Coast College and Loyola Marymount. The women's race is scheduled for a 7:50 a.m. start. The varsity eight consists of coxswain Courtney Haase, Cynthia Savoca, Maria Bokulich, Renee Holl, Jenifer Gehlsen, Breah Neimiec, Karen O'Hagan, Kristi Aamodt, and Bridget Troy. Southern Methodist and Massachusetts earned No. 1 seeds in the other two Cal Cup heat races. Defending Cal Cup champion Duke has moved into the Jessop-Whittier Cup regatta.
In addition to Varsity 8 action in the San Diego Crew Classic, Gonzaga will also send several boats to compete in Lewis and Clark Invite in Portland on Saturday morning. Racing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at Vancouver Lake just across the state line in Washington.
