Men's Golf 9th In Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational

GOODYEAR, AZ - Sophomore Matt Munroe fired an even-par 144 in Monday's two rounds of the Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational to tie for 18th and help Gonzaga University to ninth place heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes.

Munroe shot a 71-73 over the par 72, 7,015-yard Palm Valley Golf Course layout. Adam Syverson was 1-over par with a 74-71 to tie for 20th and Souta Nozaka was 2-over par after rounds of 70-76 to tie for 27th.

Cal State Bakersfield, led by Bill Noon, shot a 13-under 563 to take a 10-stroke lead over Grand Canyon University. Gonzaga shot a 584 to tie with the University of Portland for ninth, one stroke behind Loyola Marymount University and two shots out of sixth. Gonzaga and Portland hold a one shot lead over Weber State University.

Noon, who shot a tournament record 135 (9-under) for the first day of play, holds a four-shot lead over the University of Idaho's Bill Witte and Western Washington University's Chris Anderson. The previous mark (136) was set in 1992 and equaled in 2001 by Grand Canyon's John Davis.

As a team, Bakersfield's first round score was one shot off the tournament's single-round record of 274, established by Canyon two years ago. Western Washington (575) is 12 shots off the lead in third, with Boise State University (578) and Saint Martin's College (579) rounding out the top five.
