Bulldog Women Advance Three To Grand Final

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Gonzaga University's women's crew team had a successful first day at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) championship by advancing three boats to Sunday's Grand Final.
The Bulldogs varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice four will all compete for titles on Sunday after posting heat victories over the 2,000-meter Lake Natoma course on Saturday. The varsity eight won its heat in 6:52.8, the second varsity eight came across in first place in its heat in 7:13.3 and the novice four timed 7:44.1 in winning its heat.
Gonzaga's varsity four finished fourth in its heat but won the Petite Final in 8:26.1 to claim seventh overall. The boat consisted of coxswain Melissa Hayes, Brittany Price, Sarah Valenti, Daphne Dagsaan and Heather Cromer.
The top two finishers from each heat advanced to Sunday's Grand Final, the third and fourth place finishers meet in the Petite Final and the fifth and sixth place finishers race in the Third Final.
Gonzaga's varsity eight won last year's Grand Final in 6:49.7 and had the fastest time of the five other finalists during Saturday's heats. Host Sacramento State University finished in 6:55.1 to take second in Heat 3 with Gonzaga and Loyola Marymount University finished in 6:57.9 in winning Heat 2. Others in the Grand Final are Willamette university (7:05.6), the University of San Diego (7:05.8 in winning Heat 1) and San Diego State University (7:07.3).
Gonzaga's varsity eight boat consisted of coxswain Courtney Haase, Cynthia Savoca, Maria Bokulich, Renee Holl, Jenifer Gehlsen, Breah Neimiec, Karen O'Hagan, Kristi Aamodt and Bridget Troy.
In the second varsity eight the boat of coxswain Courtney Serpa, Kari Durgan, Carolyn Schepper, Joni Goodman, Jessica Nestor, Jenni Cooper, Hilda Morones, Andrea Genrod and Alison Cushman will be up against Sacramento State (7:22.9), San Diego State (7:25.7) and UC Davis (7:27.5).
The novice four will be challenged by Pacific Lutheran University (7:48.1), the University of Puget Sound (7:51.9), Long Beach State University (7:53.5), the University of Portland (8:04.1) and Seattle Pacific University (8:08.5).
