Women's Rowing Adds Two New Coaches

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University head women's rowing coach Glenn Putyrae announced the addition of two new staff members with the recent hiring of Sandra Calfo and Melissa Flint. Calfo replaces five year assistant coach Kate Tytus who left the program in June to pursue other career opportunities, while Flint fills a newly created position as the Bulldogs second assistant coach.
Calfo joins the Gonzaga staff after three successful years as the Novice women's coach at Purdue University. In her three seasons at Purdue, the novice women have women first place honors at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships in 2001, 2002 and 2003. In addition Calfo's novice squads have also competed at the Dad Vail Championships with a first place finish in 2002. A 1999 graduate of Purdue, Calfo was a three year member of the women's crew team with two years in the Varsity 8 boat. As a senior she was voted the team's most outstanding rower by her teammates.
Flint moves to Gonzaga after rowing at Oregon State University from 1998 through 2002. After graduating from OSU in 2002, Flint stayed on as a volunteer coach with the women's rowing program working primarily with the women's novice team. In addition to her experience with the Beavers rowing program, Flint served as the head coach for the Corvallis Rowing Club Master's Program for the past year. Flint was captain of the 2002 OSU Varsity team which finished third at the Pacific-10 Conference championships.
The Gonzaga women's rowing program recently won its seventh consecutive West Coast Conference rowing championship before win the ECAC National Invitational Regatta in Princeton, New Jersey.
