Adam Syverson stands tied for second with a 36-hole total of 143 to help Gonzaga University to a 587 and in fourth place Monday after the first day of the Bulldog Fall Invitational men's golf tournament at Hangman Valley Golf Course.
Syverson had rounds of 70-73 to trail the University of Idaho's Bill Witte who opened with 65-70 -135 over the 6,876-yard, par 72 course for an 8-stroke lead heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes. The shotgun start begins at 8 a.m.
Syverson is tied with Mike McCabe of the University of Portland who matched Syverson's rounds of 70-73. The Pilots are in third place with a slim one-shot lead over the Bulldogs as the two West Coast Conference foes stayed within striking distance of the Vandals.
Matt Munroe also turned in a solid first day for the Bulldogs with a pair of 73's for a 146 and a tie for seventh, and Jimmy Hayes put together a pair of 74's for 148 to tie for 15th.
The Vandals hold the team lead with a 575 for a 3-stroke advantage over Weber State University.
