Crew Completes Heavy Racing Schedule To Open Fall Season

Under overcast skies and facing a slight head wind crews from Gonzaga University and Washington State University opened the 2004 Fall racing season with a heavy schedule as each team entered several boats during three flights of racing on Saturday morning at the 3,500 course on the Spokane River.
In the first flight of the morning Washington State won three of the five schedule races pulling to victory in both the men's and women's varsity eight's and the women's junior varsity eight. Gonzaga collected wins in the men's novice eight with a 52-second victory and in the women's novice eight with an 18-second victory. WSU's men's varsity eight won by 10-seconds while the Cougar varsity women won by 19 seconds and the junior varsity women by 28-seconds.
In the second flight Washington State won three of the five races as the Cougars easily won the women's varsity and junior varsity eight races. WSU also picked up a win in the men's varsity four edging the top Gonzaga boat by seven seconds. The Cougars won the women's varsity race by 29-seconds and the junior varsity race by 40-seconds. In the men's junior varsity eight race Washington State initially won the race by six-seconds but was accessed a 10-second penalty for cutting a buoy on the course handing the Gonzaga men a four-second margin of victory. The women's novice race was dominated by the Bulldogs top boat winning by 55-seconds over the second GU boat and 57-seconds over the Washington State first novice entry.
In the final flight Gonzaga and Washington State split in four races. The Bulldogs rowed to victory in the men's and women's novice eight races with the men winning by 51-seconds and the women winning by 27-seconds. Washington State won the women's varsity race by 25-seconds to complete the three race event while the Cougars also won the women's varsity four race by nine seconds.
Gonzaga's men's varsity eight consisted of coxswain Mara Oblak, stroke Connor Barry, Pat Haffey, Ben Foley, Nathan Wilson, Matthew Wernette, Derek Clemmensen, Nick Talbot and bow David Hinshaw.
Gonzaga's women's varsity eight consisted of coxswain Erin Palmiter, stroke Kari Durgan, Karen O'Hagan, Nicole Aadland-Lewis, Jessica Kocarnik, Maria Fussell, Heather Jewell, Jenni Cooper, and box Carolyn Schepper.
Other Gonzaga Men's Boat Line-ups: JV8 - coxswain Elaine Parry, stroke Ben Rosenblatt, Warren Noth, Scott McCoy, Drew Hastings, Joe Dudley, Justin Bayley, Matt White and bow Brad Jonnes; Novice 8 "A" - coxswain Meghan Quinn, stroke Joe Dudley, Warren Noth, Scott McCoy, Drew Hastings, Ben Rosenblatt, Michael Smoot, Justin Bayley and bow Sean Haase; Novice 8 "B" - coxswain Virginia Moore, stroke Ryan Davenport, Brett Bossevain, Joe Dudley, Sean Haase, Frank Normandin, Michael Smoot, Drew Smith and bow Chris Pay.

Gonzaga will host its annual alumni weekend next Saturday and Sunday at the Gonzaga boat house.
