Men's Crew Finishes Sixth At Head Of The Lake

SEATTLE - Gonzaga University men's and women's crew wrapped up the 2004 fall racing season with strong performances at the Head of the Lake Regatta at Montlake Cut in Seattle. Gonzaga's women captured the varsity four event while the Bulldogs placed in the Top 6 in the other four events in which they were entered.
The women's first varsity four boat rowed a time of 18:28.83 to easily win the event while the second Gonzaga women's varsity four placed seventh in the event with a time of 19:09.04. The winning boat included coxswain Erin Palmiter, stroke Kari Durgan, Karen O'Hagan, Nicole Aadland-Lewis and bow Jessica Kocarnik. Washington State University placed second in the field while the USA Juniors four was third. In the women's junior varsity eight Gonzaga finished with a time of 17:46.91 to cross the line in fifth place. The University of Washington's junior varsity eight won the event with a time of 16:38.64 followed by Washington State. In the third varsity eight race the Bulldogs finished fourth with a time of 18:23.11. Washington won the race at 17:30.35 followed by University of Victoria and the Pocock Rowing Center.
On the men's side Gonzaga placed sixth in both varsity eight and junior varsity eight races. Washington won the varsity eight race with a time of 14:22.62 followed by U Victoria and the University of British Columbia. The Bulldogs varsity eight pulled a time of 15:35.11 in the race. Washington also won the junior varsity eight with a time of 14:48:17. U Victoria was second followed by Oregon State University in third. Gonzaga's junior varsity eight pulled a time of 15:57.81 to finish less than a second behind Washington's third junior varsity eight boat.
Gonzaga's two men's boats were comprised of coxswain Lauren Gadeken, stroke Connor Barry, Pat Haffey, Ben Foley, Nathan Wilson, Matthew Wernette, Derek Clemmensen, Matthew White and bow David Hinshaw in the varsity eight. Coxswain Mara Oblak, stroke Joe Dudley, Warren North, Scott McCoy, Brett Bossevain, Ben Rosenblatt, Michael Smoot, Justin Bayley and bow Drew Hastings made up the junior varsity eight.
On the women' side Gonzaga's two varsity fours consisted of coxswain Erin Palmiter, stroke Kari Durgan, Karen O'Hagen, Nicole Aadland-Lewis and bow Jessica Kocarnik in one boat and coxswain Melissa Refruerzo, stroke Jenni Cooper, Sarah Allison, Brianna Morin and bow Kelsey Koenig in the other boat. The junior varsity eight included coxswain Joan Aubry, stroke Maria Fussell, Brittany Price, Teresa Archuleta, Julie Smetana, Cory Nelson, Kathryn Kocarnik, Mariah Smith-Miloff and bow Jessica Uphoff. The Bulldogs third varsity eight included coxswain Kris Lund, stroke Liz Sambach, Rebecca Jensen, Whitney Patrick, Ann Parker, Courtney Haia, Stephanie Murphy, Jessica Michaels and bow Kelsey Raap.
The Bulldogs will return to action in March as they open the spring racing season at home on March 12. The men will host the University of British Columbia and Orange Coast College while the women will race against British Columbia. Spring racing will take place at the 2,000 meter Silver Lake course just outside of Spokane,
