Bulldogs 25th In AP Poll

NEW YORK (Ticker) - An impressive victory over previous No. 1 Wake Forest has moved Illinois to the top of the this week's Associated Press college basketball poll.
The Fighting Illini (6-0) jumped from third after routing the Demon Deacons, 91-73, in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and edged Kansas (4-0) for the No. 1 spot.
Illinois received 25 of 72 first-place votes and collected 1,717 points. Kansas garnered 23 first-place votes and 1,700 points.
Gonzaga, which fell out of the Top 25 following a loss to Illinois on Nov. 27 at the Wooden Tradition in Indianapolis, moved back into the poll at No. 25 following victories last week over then-No. 14 Washington and Massachusetts.
The Bulldogs were unable to get back into the USA Today/ESPN Top 25, the Bulldogs the third team in the others receiving votes category.
The top 25 again featured a record seven Atlantic Coast Conference teams, including four in the top 10. Georgia Tech (5-0), which claimed 12 first-place votes, heads the ACC contingent at No. 3, while Wake Forest (6-1) dropped to sixth following its first loss. North Carolina (6-1) is No. 8 and Duke No. 9.
Syracuse (7-0) and Oklahoma State (5-0) complete the top five, while No. 7 Connecticut (3-0) and No. 10 Kentucky (4-1) round out the first 10.
Pittsburgh (5-0) starts the second 10, followed by North Carolina State (6-0), Louisville (4-1), Texas (5-1), Arizona (5-2), Washington (5-1), Iowa (6-1), Alabama (6-1), Virginia (6-0) and Michigan State (4-2).
The Spartans dropped nine spots after losing two of three games last week. They lost to Duke and George Washington (5-1), which also beat Maryland in the championship game of the BB&T Classic to move into the poll for the first time this season at No. 21.
Completing the poll are Mississippi State (6-2), Maryland (4-2), Wisconsin (4-1) and Gonzaga (5-1).
Maryland suffered the week's biggest fall, plummeting 11 spots after also losing two of three games. The Terrapins' other defeat came to Wisconsin.
Florida and Notre Dame dropped out.
The Illini also jumped to the top spot in the USA Today/ESPN top 25.
