Varsity Crew Heads To WCC Challenge

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's and women's varsity crew will return to action this weekend as they head to California to compete in the second annual WCC Challenge. The event consists of West Coast Conference schools that offer rowing and indepedent entries from Orange Coast College and Sacramento State. The two-day event kicks off Saturday morning with racing at Redwood Shores in Redwood, Calif.
Gonzaga's varsity men will face Orange Coast College and Santa Clara University on Saturday before racing Saint Mary's College and Loyola Marymount University on Sunday. Each race will be a 2,000 meter spring as the Bulldogs varsity 8 will consist of coxswain Mara Oblak, stroke Mark Voorhees, Pat Haffey, Max Malotky, Nathan Wilson, Matthew Wernette, Derek Clemmensen, Connor Barry and bow David Hinshaw.
The women's varsity eight will also compete in four races at the 2,000 meter distance. GU will square off against the University of San Diego and Santa Clara on Saturday before racing against Saint Mary's and Loyola Marymount on Sunday. The women's varsity 8 will consist of coxswain Courtney Serpa, stroke Maria Bokulich, Caryolyn Schepper, Kari Durgan, Jessica Kocarnik, Kristi Aamodt, Karen O'Hagan, Jenni Cooper and bow Mariah Smith-Miloff.
In addition to varsity racing action in California, Gonzaga's junior varsity men will head to Pullman, Wash., to face Washington State University on Saturday morning while the women's junior varsity and novice boats will entertain WSU at Silver Lake.
