REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - Gonzaga University women's varsity crew won both of its races on Saturday while the Gonzaga varsity men split in two contests during the first day of competition at the WCC Challenge in Redwood Shores, Calif. Racing will continue on Sunday with Gonzaga facing Saint Mary's College and Loyola Marymount on the 2,000 meter course.
Gonzaga's varsity women opened the morning session with a strong piece of 6:47.2 to easily row past the University of San Diego which covered the distance in 7:04.5. The Zags would garner another big victory in the afternoon session as they posted a 7:03.6 time to outdistance Santa Clara University with a time of 7:29.2. The women's varsity crew consisted of coxswain Courtney Serpa, stroke Maria Bokulich, Caryolyn Schepper, Kari Durgan, Jessica Kocarnik, Kristi Aamodt, Karen O'Hagan, Jenni Cooper and bow Mariah Smith-Miloff.
On the men's varsity side, Gonzaga split two races with Orange Coast College and Santa Clara University. The men lost by a six-second margin to OCC as Gonzaga rowed a time of 6:00.2 against OCC's mark of 5:54.6. Gonzaga would return to the winner's side in the afternoon session with a four-second win over Santa Clara University. Gonzaga rowed the afternoon piece at 6:08.6 while SCU was behind at 6:12.4. Gonzaga's men's varsity boat included coxswain Mara Oblak, stroke Mark Voorhees, Pat Haffey, Max Malotky, Nathan Wilson, Matthew Wernette, Derek Clemmensen, Connor Barry and bow David Hinshaw.
Gonzaga also participated in rowing action with its junior varsity and novice boats on Saturday. Gonzaga's junior varsity men traveled to Pullman, Wash., to face Washington State University while the Zags women's JV and novice boats hosted WSU at Silver Lake.
In men's JV action, the 2,000 meter course in Pullman was deemed to windy to race so the two schools moved to a different portion of the Snake River and rowed a timed piece of 6 minutes, 20 seconds, for distance. Gonzaga was able to knock off the Cougars JV and Novice boats by a length in each of the two timed contests.
On the women's JV and novice side of things, WSU swept all five categories against Gonzaga winning racings in the JV8, Novice 8, Varsity 4, Novice 4 and Varsity Second 4. The Bulldogs closest race was in the novice 8 in which the top Gonzaga novice boat finished one second behind the second Washington State Novice Boat.
