The Gonzaga University men's and women's crews opened the 2004 home racing season with a bang on Saturday morning as the Bulldogs won nine of ten races against Western Washington University on the 2,000 meter Silver Lake course. Gonzaga won the two premier events with a seven-second margin of victory in the men's varsity eight and a five-second win in the women's varsity eight. Race conditions were nearly perfect with a four-mile head wind and calm water.
On the women's side Gonzaga swept all six events with wins coming in the varsity eight, junior varsity eight, novice eight, varsity four, junior varsity four and novice four categories. In the women's varsity eight race Gonzaga overcame a one-seat deficit at the 1,000 meter mark and pulled away for a five-second victory as the Bulldogs varsity crossed the finish line with a time of 6:58.90 compared to WWU's mark of 7:03.10. Gonzaga's junior varsity and novice eights had easy victories in their races with the JV winning by 19 seconds and the novice boat winning by 37 seconds. In four's competition Gonzaga also rowed to easy victories in all three events with GU winning the varsity four race by 19 seconds, the JV four race by 19 seconds and the novice four race by 10 seconds.
On the men's side Gonzaga won three of four races, the lone Western Washington victory coming in the varsity four competition. The men's varsity eight rowed a strong piece as the Bulldogs pulled away at the 1,000 meter mark and never looked back as the crossed the line with a time of 6:21.29, Western Washington was seven-seconds back at 6:28.62. In the closest race of the day WWU overcame a slight GU lead with 300 meters remaining in the varsity four race and defeated the Bulldogs by one stroke at the finish line. Gonzaga then won JV four race by 11 seconds and the novice four race by 27 seconds.
Gonzaga returns to home racing action next Saturday when the Bulldogs host UC Davis at 9 a.m. at Silver Lake. The Gonzaga women will then return to Silver Lake on Sunday morning with an additional home race against Saint Mary's College at 10 a.m.
