Course conditions plagued all eight teams at the West Coast Conference Championships during final round competition on Tuesday but despite the windy conditions the Gonzaga University men's golf team was able to make up four strokes and climb up to sixth place at the two-day event at Riverbend Golf Course in Madera, Calif. The Bulldogs made up three strokes to pass the University of Portland for sixth while Stu Bell was the Zags top individual golfer finishing in a tie for 12th.
Pepperdine University won the team title despite only placing one golfer in the top five finishers. The Waves won the event with three-round total of 868, two strokes better than Saint Mary's College. The University of San Francisco finished third at 874 followed by the University of San Diego (891), Loyola Marymount University (892), Gonzaga (914), Portland (917) and Santa Clara University (921).
San Francisco golfers Robert Frye and Tyler Pitt finished first and second in the individual competition with one-stroke separating the Dons golfers. Frye was 8-under for the event with a total of 208. Pitt was 7-under followed by Joe Lanza of Saint Mary's at 5-under and Michael Putnam of Pepperdine at 3-under. Bell, a freshman from West Vancouver, B.C., was tied for sixth heading into Tuesday's before shooting an 82 to finish tied for 12th as Gonzaga's top golfer with a 222.
Matt Munroe, an honorable mention All-WCC golfer in 2002, finished tied for 21st with a 227 while Souta Nozaka, honorable mention All-WCC last year, was tied for 26th with a 231. Jimmy Hayes was 32nd with a score of 234 and Ryan Fritz was 38th with a 247.
