Saint Mary's Hands Women's Tennis 4-1 Loss

MORAGA, Calif. - Junior Sirrah Williams earned a singles point, but it was not enough as the Gonzaga University women's tennis team was defeated by Saint Mary's College, 4-1, in a second round match of the West Coast Conference Championships on Saturday. The Bulldogs dropped to 11-13 with the loss and will face University of San Francisco at 9 a.m. on Sunday, April 25 in a battle for seventh place.
Gonzaga claimed one of the doubles matches as senior duo Jamie Buterbaugh and Angela Fry defeated Aude Lambert and Nicole Hunstock, 8-6. The Gaels took control of the other matches and clinched the doubles point with Megan Schulman and Dunya Stankovic toasting victory over Leigh Orne and Sirrah Williams, 8-6, and Kate Harden and Kristen Kummer winning their match over Katie Sanders and Florence Wasko, 8-3.
Saint Mary's won three-of-six singles matches to earn their spot in the consolation final. Lambert edged Buterbaugh (2-6, 6-4, 6-1) in the No. 1 spot, Schulman defeated Orne (6-2, 6-2) at No. 3 and Hunstock defeated Sanders (6-2, 6-1) at No. 5 for the win.
Williams grabbed one point for the Bulldogs with a victory over Kummer (6-3, 6-3). Williams remains the only Gonzaga tennis player to earn a point during this West Coast Conference Championships.
