RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's crew wrapped up their 2004 season with a 10th place finish at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships on Sunday at Lake Natoma outside of Sacramento, Calif. Gonzaga finished fourth in their morning heat and followed that up with a fourth place finish in the varsity eight Petite Final.
In the morning heat race the Bulldogs varsity eight had a slow start in the 2,000 meter race as all five teams faced a gentle cross wind. Washington State covered the course at 6:37.90 followed by USC at 6:41.20. The Bulldogs chased Sacramento State down the course with SSU going in at 6;44.60, Gonzaga followed at 6:48.90. UC Davis was fifth in the heat race at 6:50.50.
Advancing to the afternoon Petite Final, Gonzaga closed strong in the last 500 meters but could not overcome fast starts by Oregon State, Loyola Marymount and Sacramento State. OSU won the race at 7:01.89 followed by LMU in 7:03.10. SSU was third with a time of 7:07.16. Gonzaga was fourth with a hard charging time of 7:09.25. UC Davis was fifth at 7:14.30, UC Santa Barbara sixth at 7:26.55 and San Diego State last at 7:34.73. All seven teams raced against a five-mile head wind.
Gonzaga's varsity eight consisted of coxswain Courtney Serpa, stroke Maria Bokulich, Carolyn Schepper, Kari Durgan, Jessica Kocarnik, Kristi Aamodt, Karen O'Hagan, Nicole Aadland-Lewis and bow Heather Jewell. The race was the final collegiate appearance for seniors Bokulich, Aamodt and Serpa all four helping the Bulldogs win four WCC titles, one WIRA title and one ECAC National Invitational title over the last four years.
