RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - Gonzaga University men's and women's crew placed six boats in Sunday's Grand Finals of the 2004 Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships and the Bulldogs came away with one title and five top three finishes as the final day of racing concluded at the 2,000 meter Lake Natoma course outside of Sacramento, Calif. Gonzaga won the title in the women's novice four as the Bulldogs defeated Saint Mary's College by seven seconds to mark the third straight year that a Gonzaga crew has won a WIRA Championship.
In the two featured races of the day Gonzaga's varsity women's eight rowed neck-and-neck with Sacramento State University as both crews attempted to chase down Loyola Marymount University, the Lions winning their second straight WIRA varsity eight title with a time of 6:51.6. Sacramento State edged Gonzaga by less than a second as the Hornets crossed the line at 6:55.1 and the Bulldogs at 6:55.9. UC Davis, Puget Sound and UC Santa Barbara rounded out the field. On the men's side, a day after turning out the second fastest heat time, Gonzaga was stuck on the outside in lane five and the Bulldogs raced Puget Sound for third place with Puget Sound winning by a seat at 6:08.0, the Bulldogs coming in at 6:09.1. Orange Coast College won the varsity eight men's race with a time of 6:01.5, a fraction ahead of UC Davis at 6:01.6. UC San Diego was fifth and Santa Clara was sixth.
In the junior varsity races Gonzaga was unable to defend its WIRA title as the Bulldogs finished five seconds behind Sacramento State, the Hornets winning the event in a time of 6:59.0. Gonzaga was second at 7:04.2, two-seconds ahead of UC Davis at 7:06.8. LMU was fourth followed by San Diego State and UC Santa Barbara. On the men's side Gonzaga chased front runners OCC and UC Davis down the course but could not catch either boat as they finished in third place for the men's junior varsity eight race: UC Davis won in a time of 6:13.0 with OCC second at 6:15.6 and Gonzaga third at 6:19.9. UC San Diego finished fourth with Puget Sound and San Diego State fifth and sixth.
Only the Gonzaga women entered boats in the fours division with the women's novice four winning the lone WIRA title for Gonzaga. The GU women finished the course in 7:48.4, a seven second victory over Saint Mary's at 7:55.5. Pacific Lutheran was third at 7:56.6 followed by Puget Sound, Portland and Colorado. In the women's varsity four category Gonzaga was second as Seattle Pacific dominated the race winning with a convincing time of 7:32.8. Gonzaga was second at 7:44.2, a four-second margin over third place OCC. Saint Mary's, UC Davis and Oregon rounded out the field.

GONZAGA LINE-UPS
The women's varsity crew includes coxswain Courtney Serpa, stroke Maria Bokulich, Carolyn Schepper, Kari Durgan, Jessica Kocarnik, Kristi Aamodt, Karen O'Hagan, Nicole Aadland-Lewis and bow Heather Jewell. The junior varsity eight is comprised of coxswain Melissa Hayes, stroke Mariah Smith-Miloff, Bridget Troy, Joni Goodman, Jess Nestor, Teresa Archuleta, Maria Fussell, Jenni Cooper and bow Sarah Allison. Gonzaga's varsity four boat is coxed by Erin Palmiter with stroke Brianna Morin, Hilda Morones, Brittany Price and box Alison Cushman. Gonzaga's novice four includes coxswain Melissa Refuerzo, stroke Jessica Michaels, Courtney Cline, Liz Sambach and box Ann Parker.
Gonzaga's varsity eight will include coxswain Elaine Parry, stroke Mark Voorhees, Pat Haffey, Max Malotky, Nathan Wilson, Matthew Wernette, Ben Foley, Connor Barry and bow David Hinshaw. Gonzaga's junior varsity eight includes coxswain Mara Oblak, stroke Nick Talbot, Billy Votava, Mike Wall, Derek Clemmensen, James Toshack, Mike Demmert, Matt White and bow Brad Jones.
