Men's Varsity Four Wins IRA Heat Race

CAMDEN, New Jersey - The Gonzaga University men's varsity four crew advanced to the Friday semifinals at the 2004 IRA National Championships after the Bulldogs won their Thursday morning heat race on the 2,000 meter Cooper River course. The Gonzaga men's freshman four finished fifth in their morning heat race and fourth in the afternoon repechage race. The freshman four will now compete on Friday for a spot in the Third and Fourth Level finals while the varsity men will have a chance at either the Grand or Petite Final.
The varsity men's four rowed a solid piece going head-to-head with Wisconsin over the race course as the two boats finished neck-and-neck with Gonzaga winning by less than a second at 6:34.07. The Badgers were second at 6:34.65 with Saint Joseph's finishing a distant third at 6:40.46. Georgetown, Princeton and Yale rounded out the heat. With the win Gonzaga advanced to the Friday semifinal with heat winners Harvard, Washington and George Washington also advancing to the top two semifinal heats. Gonzaga and Harvard will be joined in their semifinal heat by Michigan, Wisconsin, Army and Saint Joseph's after repechage racing was competed on Thursday afternoon. The other top semifinal heat will consist of Cornell, Marietta, Washington, George Washington, Hobart and Ohio State. The top three boats from each semifinal will advance to Saturday's Grand Final with the last three boats from each racing competing in the Petite Final.
Gonzaga's varsity four consists of coxswain Mara Oblak, stroke Mark Voorhees, Pat Haffey, Connor Barry and bow Nathan Wilson. Gonzaga's freshman four consists of coxswain Lauren Gadeken, stroke Max Malotky, Derek Clemmensen, Matthew Wernette and bow David Hinshaw.
The Bulldogs freshman four did not have a good start in their morning heat race and despite a solid closing Gonzaga finished fifth in the heat race just behind Georgia Tech. Marist ran away with the freshman four heat with a time of 6:46.43 followed by Virginia and Rutgers. Georgia Tech was fourth at 6:55.69 just edging Gonzaga at 6:55.88. In the afternoon repechage Gonzaga again was saddled with a tough heat as Harvard dominated the field with a time of 6:37.58. North Carolina was second at 6:41.44 followed by Army at 6:46.66. The Zags finished 9-seconds back of Army at 6:55.46 with Lehigh last in the race at 7:01.19. Gonzaga will compete in the second level semifinals on Friday with Lehigh, Georgia Tech, Princeton and Virginia competing in their heat. The other second level semifinal includes Cornell, Rutgers, Army, Boston University, Ohio State and Loyola. The top three boats in each of those semifinals will compete in Saturday's Third Final with the remaining boats competing in the Fourth Final.
