Men's Varsity Crew Heads To IRA Petite Final

CAMDEN, New Jersey - Gonzaga University men's varsity four crew will compete in Saturday's Petite Final at the IRA National Championships after the Bulldogs finished sixth during Friday semifinal racing at the 2,000 meter Cooper River course. The Bulldogs had won their opening heat on Thursday to advance to Friday's semifinals but could not overcome a slow start during the race. In the men's freshman four second level semifinals, Gonzaga finished second in its heat race and will compete in Saturday's Third Final.
The varsity four pulled a time of 6:54.64 but could not catch a very fast Michigan boat that won the race in 6:42.7. The Wolverines easily defeated Harvard which was second at 6:45.97 and Saint Joseph's finished third at 6:46.9 to also advance to Saturday's Grand Final. Army, Wisconsin and Gonzaga rounded out the semifinal heat with all three boats moving into the Petite Final. In the other semifinal race Washington won a close race against George Washington with the Huskies winning at 6:40.52, one-second ahead of GWU at 6:41.66. Hobart was third in the semifinal race to gain the last spot in the Grand Final. Marietta, Cornell and Ohio State finished fourth through sixth in the second semifinal with all three boats now competing in the Petite Final.
On the men's freshman four side Gonzaga rowed a strong piece as the Bulldogs finished second in their heat race with a time of 7:23.53 to advance to the Third Final on Saturday. Princeton won the heat race with a time of 7:17.60 followed by Gonzaga and Georgia Tech with all three boats making the Third Final. Lehigh and Virginia finished fourth and fifth closing out the heat. In the other semifinal Cornell edged Rutgers and Boston University as all three boats advanced to the Third Final. Cornell won the race with a time of 7:29.77 followed by Rutgers at 7:31.62 and BU at 7:32.31. Ohio State, Army and Loyola rounded out the racing field.
Gonzaga's varsity four consists of coxswain Mara Oblak, stroke Mark Voorhees, Pat Haffey, Connor Barry and bow Nathan Wilson. Gonzaga's freshman four consists of coxswain Lauren Gadeken, stroke Max Malotky, Derek Clemmensen, Matthew Wernette and bow David Hinshaw.
