Men's Varsity Crew Finishes 9th In The Nation

CAMDEN, New Jersey - The Gonzaga University men's varsity and freshmen crews completed its 2004 racing season on Saturday morning at the IRA National Championships on Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey. The Bulldogs finished 9th in the nation in the men's varsity four competition after a third place showing in Saturday's Petite Final. Gonzaga's freshmen four was 15th in the nation after finishing third in the Third Level Final. This marks the sixth time in school history that a Gonzaga boat has finished the season in the Top 10, the highest finish coming in 1999 when Gonzaga's freshmen four was 3rd at the IRA National Championships.
The men's varsity four Petite Final was a balanced race with Ohio State pulling away near the end of the 2,000 meter event to win with a time of 7:00.7. Army was second at 7:02.46 with Gonzaga crossing the finish line third at 7:04.54. Cornell, Marietta and Wisconsin rounded out the six school race with Cornell just one-second behind the Bulldogs at 7:05.71. Washington won the men's varsity four national championship with a win in the Grand Final while Temple won Saturday's Third Final.
In the men's freshmen four Third Level Final Gonzaga chased Princeton and Rutgers down the course as the Princeton easily won the event with a time of 7:20.82, a four-second margin over second place Rutgers at 7:12.12. Gonzaga was third with a time of 7:26.96 as the Bulldogs held off Boston University with a time of 7:27.7. Cornell and Georgia Tech completed the race in fifth and sixth place. Harvard claimed the men's freshmen four national championship with a win in the Grand Final while Saint Joseph's won the Petite Final.
Gonzaga's varsity four consists of coxswain Mara Oblak, stroke Mark Voorhees, Pat Haffey, Connor Barry and bow Nathan Wilson. Gonzaga's freshman four consists of coxswain Lauren Gadeken, stroke Max Malotky, Derek Clemmensen, Matthew Wernette and bow David Hinshaw.
