BEND, ORE. - Gonzaga University sophomore-to-be Mary Kate Morgan of Longview, Wash., will meet Renee Skidmore of Everett, Wash., in the 36-hole final of the 103rd PNGA Women's Amateur Championship at the Bend Golf and Country Club on Friday.
Skidmore defeated 2nd seed Katie Brophy 3 and 2 in their morning quarterfinal match. Skidmore was 2-under par for the day when she closed out Brophy. Morgan defeated Ellie Brophy 1 up in their quarterfinal match. Morgan held an early four up lead on Brophy only to see Brophy fight back to one down when Morgan bogeyed the 15th hole. They matched pars on the remaining holes.
Skidmore continued her strong play in her afternoon semifinal match with Courtney McCracken. Her laser like iron shots and deft putting allowed her to advance to the final with a well deserved 6 and 5 margin. Morgan's semifinal opponent was local favorite Amy Mombert. Mombert gained a quick 2 up lead by winning the first two holes of the match with pars, but Morgan went to two up when she won the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th holes. Mombert birdied the 9th and 10th holes to square the match. Morgan made pars on the 12th and 13th holes to forge an insurmountable lead.
Morgan began her run with a 5 and 3 win over former Gonzaga teammate Carrie DeGree on Wednesday morning. DeGree, a senior for the Bulldogs this past season, was recently hired as an assistant golf coach at the University of Idaho. Morgan defeated Katie Kofmehl 4 and 3 on Wednesday afternoon to reach Thursday's quarterfinals.
