Women's Golfers Struggle In Opener

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Gonzaga University's women's golf team struggled on opening day of the 2004 season Monday, shooting a 323-320 for a 36-hole total of 643 in the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic hosted by Colorado State University.
The Bulldogs had just two sub-80 rounds over the par 72, 6,113-yard Ptarmigan Country Club layout. Mary Kate Morgan shot a second-round 75 for the best Bulldog effort of the day for a 36-hole total of 157 to tie for 48th. Jennifer Swanson had an opening-round 78 to go with an afternoon round of 82 for a 160 and a tie for 59th.
The final 18 holes will be played Tuesday.
The Bulldogs, 17th in the 18-team field after 36 holes, are nine strokes behind No. 16 University of Wyoming and four strokes ahead of last-place Weber State University heading into Tuesday's final round.
Host Colorado State University seems well on its way to the team title after a 36-hole total of 581, good for a 15-stroke lead over San Jose State University.
Medalist honors are still up for grabs. Laura Luethke of Fresno State University and Jessica Potter of the University of San Francisco shot identical rounds of 68-74 to tie for the first-day lead at 142. They hold a 2-stroke lead over a trio of golfers.
