MOSCOW, Idaho - Freshman Sarah Sheffield was the bright spot for Gonzaga University on Friday as she stood in a four-way tie for 10th after 36 holes of the Lady Vandal Fall Invitational women's golf tournament.
Sheffield, from Kea'au, Hawai'i,fired a 79-78 for a 157 heading into Saturday's final round over the par 72, 6,107-yard University of Idaho Golf Course layout.
The Bulldogs are in seventh place in the eight-team event with a first-day total of 650, just two shots behind Idaho State University and three behind fellow West Coast Conference rival University of Portland.
Renee Skidmore of the host Vandals had rounds of 71-74 for the first-day lead at 145, five strokes better than fellow teammates Jennifer Tucker and Cassie Castleman, both with identical rounds of 75-75.
Idaho also built what would seem to be an insurmountable lead in the team chase with rounds of 298-302 for 600 and a 28-stroke lead over the University of Montana.
Following Saturday's play, the eight teams in the tournament will take Sunday off prior to being joined by three other teams for the Inland Empire Intercollegiate Women's Golf Tournament on Monday and Tuesday at the Highlands Golf Course in Post Falls, Idaho.
