MOSCOW, Idaho - Gonzaga University fired a final-round 333 Saturday and slipped to last place in the eight-team Lady Vandal Fall Invitational women's golf tournament at the University of Idaho Golf Course.
The Bulldogs, seventh after Friday's opening 36 holes and just three shots out of sixth, finished with a 54-hole total of 983. The host Vandals, who held a 28-stroke lead heading into Saturday's final round, finished with a 907 for a 33-shot advantage over runner-up University of Montana.
Gonzaga's Sarah Sheffield, tied for 10th entering the final 18 holes, shot an 83 over the par 72, 6,107-yard layout and fell into a three-way tie for 21st at 940. Mary Kate Morgan had the best Bulldog round of the day with an 81 and finished in a four-way tie for 28th at 243.
Idaho's Renee Skidmore, the first-day leader, shot a final-round 77 for a 54-hole total of 222 and a three-stroke victory over teammate Cassie Castleman who shot a 75 on Saturday. The Vandals claimed four of the top six spots.
All eight teams in this tournament will join three other squads at the Highlands Golf Course in Post Falls, Idaho, for the Inland Empire Women's Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday. The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and finish with 18 holes on Tuesday. The tournament is co-hosted by Gonzaga and Eastern Washington University.
