POST FALLS, Idaho - Mary Kate Morgan fired an opening-round 74 Monday and is in eighth place entering Tuesday's final 18 holes of the Inland Empire Women's Intercollegiate golf tournament at The Highlands Golf and Country Club.
Renee Skidmore of the University of Idaho, Lindsay Snowden of UC-Riverside and Sheena Prante of Eastern Washington University share the first-round lead at 70. Prante is competing as an individual and is not part of the EWU team scoring. Laura Mengelkamp of the University of Wyoming is one shot behind the leaders with three other golfers just three shots out of the lead.
Idaho was the only squad to break 300 for the opening 18 holes, coming in at 299 as Jennifer Tucker shot 73 over 5,977-yard, par 72 layout to tie for fifth and complement Skidmore's round. UC-Riverside, second with a 307, would seem to be the only squad within striking distance of the Vandals. EWU is third at 313.
The remaining eight teams are bunched from the University of Montana's 314 which is good for fourth to Cal Poly's 322 that places them last in the 11-team field but just five strokes out of sixth. Gonzaga posted a season-best round of 321 to tie Idaho State University for ninth, those two clubs just four shots out of sixth.
Morgan paced the Gonzaga effort with her 74 despite bogeying the final three holes for a 36-38. Lacey Jo Manwaring shot 81 and the duo of Sarah Sheffield and Jennifer Swanson each posted an 83, Sheffield getting off to a rough start with a front-nine 45 but coming home with a 38. Libby Campbell, competing as an individual for the Bulldogs, also shot 83.
Tuesday's final round tees off at 7:30 a.m. The format is 36 holes because eight of the teams in the tournament competed in the 54-hole Lady Vandal Fall Invitational last Friday and Saturday.
