SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University baseball team dropped its West Coast Conference opener to the Saint Mary's College Gaels, 6-3 Friday afternoon at Avista Stadium.
With the win Saint Mary's improves to 7-11 overall and 2-2 in WCC play and the Bulldogs drop to 12-8 overall and 0-1 in WCC play.
In the fifth inning with the Bulldogs trailing 2-0, GU finally got on the boards with first baseman Bobby Carlson's sacrifice fly to right field which platted Darin Holcomb, who had singled, cutting the Zags deficit in half.
GU would knot the score at two runs a piece in the sixth inning as second baseman Scott Campbell hit an RBI single up the middle which brought across Will Ayala, who had singled. The Bulldogs would then take the lead in the seventh inning on Carlson's RBI double down the right field line which platted Jeff Culpepper, who had walked.
Two innings later the Gales would score the only two runs they would need for the win in the eighth inning on Ada Bellows' RBI single to left field and Stefan Foushee's RBI single to center field. The Gaels would also add two runs in the ninth inning on two hits to put the game at its final of 6-3.
Holcomb led the Bulldogs offense with his 3-for-5 one run scored performance.
Mezzavilla (1-1) would pick up the win for the Gaels as he allowed one run on one hit in three innings of work. Junior Josh Bryant was saddled with the loss for the Bulldogs allowing one run on two hits in 0.1 innings of work.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday as they play Saint Mary's in a 1 p.m. game at Avista Stadium.
