Women's Crew Advances To Knecht Cup Grand Final

CAMDEN, NJ - The Gonzaga University women's varsity crew turned in two solid pieces on Saturday as the Bulldogs advanced to the Grand Final of the Knecht Cup held on Cooper River in Camden, NJ. The event features some of the top crews from around the United States with Gonzaga making its first appearance in the event a successful one.
In the morning heat race Gonzaga finished second to defending champion University of Massachusetts as the top three boats from each heat race advanced to the afternoon semifinals. UMass rowed a time of 7:56.4 with Gonzaga five-seconds behind at 8:01.9. The University of Buffalo was a distant third at 8:19.6 followed by the University of New Hampshire and Lehigh University. All five morning heats faced rough racing conditions with a stiff head wind.
In the afternoon session course conditions turned favorable as the Bulldogs placed second in their semifinal heat to earn a spot in the Grand Final. Gonzaga chased George Washington University down the 2,000 meter course but could not gain the advantage as GWU won by 2.5 seconds over the Bulldogs. George Washington was across in 7:27 with Gonzaga right behind at 7:29.5. The University of Kansas was third followed by Boston College, Colgate University and the University of Connecticut.
Also advancing to Sunday's Grand Final were Massachusetts and Marist College from one semifinal and Sacramento State University and the University of Rhode Island from the other semifinal.
