CAMDEN, NJ - The Gonzaga University women's varsity crew finished in fifth place during their first appearance in the Knecht Cup Grand Final raced on Sunday afternoon at Cooper River in Camden, NJ. The Bulldogs advanced to the Grand Final after two second place finishes on Saturday in both morning heat races and afternoon semifinals.
The University of Massachusetts won their second straight Knecht Cup as they rowed a time of 6:43.8. George Washington University was second at 6:50.2. UMass and GWU were the two crews that knocked off Gonzaga during Saturday racing. Sacramento State University was third followed by Marist College in fourth. Gonzaga just pulled past the University of Rhode Island to finish in fifth place by 0.4 seconds. Gonzaga was in at 6:57.0 followed by URI ast 6:57.4.
The Bulldogs will take off next weekend before returning to action on April 29 to defend their West Coast Conference championship. Gonzaga will then look to take home their second WIRA title in three years the following two days with Sacramento State expected to also be a heavy championship contender in the women's varsity 8+ event.
