SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's and women's rowing programs will head to Sacramento, Calif., this weekend looking to defend their West Coast Conference titles. The women's program has won all eight WCC championships held while the Bulldog men have won all three WCC championships. The men's event is not-sponsored by the WCC but does involve all men's rowing programs from WCC schools that sponsor the sport.
The women's WCC championship will consist of three races in the varsity 4+, junior varsity 8+ and varsity 8+ with racing starting at Noon on Friday at the 2,000 meter Lake Natoma course. Each race is weighted and counts towards a school winning the overall WCC team title. Last season Gonzaga defeated Loyola Marymount University by one point to win their eighth straight WCC crown.
The men's WCC championship involves the junior varsity 8+ and varsity 8+ racing at 10:50 a.m. and 11 a.m. at Lake Natoma, each boat racing for an individual championship. Gonzaga's varsity 8+ has won all three previously contested WCC races while the junior varsity 8+ picked up wins in 2003 and 2004 when the event was added to the schedule.
Following WCC racing action Gonzaga will enter six boats in the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships on Saturday and Sunday at Lake Natoma. Gonzaga's women will race a novice 4+ in addition to the three boats entered in the WCC championships. Gonzaga's men will enter both boats racing in the WCC championships. Racing starts at 8 a.m. and runs through 4:30 p.m. on Saturday with Sunday's action starting at 8 a.m. and finishing up at 12:10 p.m. with men's varsity 8+ Grand Final.
Gonzaga's men's varsity 8+ has been seeded first overall while the men's and women's junior varsity 8+ have both been seeded second overall. GU's women's varsity 8+ was seeded third.
