Crew Dominates Blue Cup Regatta

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Gonzaga University men's and women's crew dominated Saturday racing action against Western Washington as the Bulldogs won seven of eight races including sweeping the inaugural Blue Cup Trophy races for men's and women's varsity boats. This marks the second straight year that Gonzaga has dominated their Northwest foes as GU won nine of ten races in Spokane last year. This year's regatta was held at Lake Samish.

The Gonzaga men won all four races against Western Washington with the varsity men rowing a time of 6:09.95 to collect an 18-second win as the Vikings crossed the line at 6:27.44. Gonzaga picked up an even wider margin of victory in the junior varsity race with Gonzaga finishing at 6:29.89 and WWU at 7:00.63. The Gonzaga novice boat had the second fastest time of the day at 6:09.85 to win by 22-seconds over Western Washington at 6:32.79. Gonzaga's junior varsity four was in at 7:17.36 with WWU finishing at 7:48.7.

Gonzaga's women also had a big day winning three of four races against Western Washington. The varsity women won by 4-seconds over Western Washington as the Bulldogs rowed a time of 6:45.47 with WWU in at 6:49.94. Last week at the NCRC Invitational Gonzaga won by only .4 seconds against Western Washington. In the junior varsity race Gonzaga's JV was in at 7:10.38 followed by the Zags third varsity 8+ at 7:19.69. Western Washington's JV crossed at 7:32.52. Gonzaga also won the women's varsity four with a time of 7:49.92 with WWU finishing at 8:04.4. The Vikings lone win on the day was in the women's novice 8+ with Western Washington edging out Gonzaga by 2-seconds. WWU was in at 6:48 followed by Gonzaga at 6:50.29. Western Washington's second novice boat crossed a distant 7:38.41.

The Gonzaga men will be off next weekend while the Gonzaga varsity women travel to the Knecht Cup in Camden, NJ. While Gonzaga and Western Washington have been rowing rivals for several years this is the first season in which the two schools have raced for a trophy, Gonzaga winning both Blue Cup races in the men's and women's varsity 8+.
