PINEHURST, N.C. - Gonzaga University's Mary Kate Morgan shot a second-round 85 Tuesday, missing the cut to enter the match play portion of the 103rd North and South Women's Amateur Golf Championship at historic Pinehurst.
Play was suspended Tuesday night because of darkness with 25 players on the course. Morgan, a junior from Longview, Wash., finished with a 36-hole qualifying round total of 172 which had her tied for 107th with players still on the course. The top 63 qualifiers will enter Wednesday's match play, with the defending champion seeded into the match play field of 64.
Morgan's second round was on Course No. 2, regarded as the most difficult course on the Pinehurst layout. Course No. 2 was a 6,472-yard, par 73 layout.
The cut for the top 63 will be about 157, depending on the outcome of the 25 players on the course who will resume play Wednesday morning.
Participants for the event were selected by invitation, the field determined based upon a potential contestant's playing reputation as well as performance in national amateur championships and overall competitive record. The maximum field is 156 contestants.
Morgan finished ninth in the West Coast Conference Championship this past spring.
