PULLMAN, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team opened the fall season Friday at the Cougar Classic hosted by the Washington State University Cougars. The University of Montana, University of Idaho, Montana State University, Washington State, the University of Portland, Eastern Washington University, Gonzaga and Boise State University all participated in the Tournament.
The Bulldogs got off to a good start as in the No. 1 singles play sophomore Emily Anderson advanced to the second round with a hard fought first round win over Montana's Cheyne Ursich. Anderson lost the first set 6-4, but came roaring back in the second set with a 6-4 win. In the final set Anderson dug in and battled her way to a 6-3 win to advance to the next round. In round two Anderson was defeated by Portland's Cristin Sammis, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Senior Kendall Bates, sophomore Amanda Becker and sophomore Erin Humphrey were also in action in No. 1 singles play with Bates receiving a first round bye and falling in the second round to Idaho's Patricia Ruman 5-7, 6-4, 7-5. Becker was defeated in the first round by Montana State's Nicole Luetolf, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 and Humphrey was defeated in the first round by Montana's Elizabeth Walker, 6-1, 6-2.
In No. 2 singles play Gonzaga had Allie Hause, Carrie Schofield and Courtney Lau competing. All three players dropped their first round matches in straight sets. In the consolation round GU put a strong fight with Schofield battling with Portland's Anna Gullickson. Schofield jumped out to an early lead taking the first set 6-4, but dropped the final two sets, 6-2, 6-2. Both Lau and Schofield were defeated in their consolation matches.
In No. 3 singles action Erica Moldenhauer and Katie Colton both lost their first round matches, and Moldenhauer received a bye in the consolation round, while Colton was defeated in her consolation match.
In doubles play the Bulldogs team of Anderson and Bates were defeated in the first round of No.1 doubles play by WSU's Amy Toth and Bianca Selaru, 8-4. GU's second No. 1 doubles team of Humphrey and Lau were defeated by Boise State's Tatiana Ganzha and Jana Mackova, 8-3.
In the No. 2 doubles spot the GU tandem of Hause and Moldenhauer received a bye along with GU's final doubles team of Becker and Schofield in the first round of doubles.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday as they compete in day two of the Cougar Classic in Pullman, Wash.
