NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The Gonzaga University men's crew team opened the spring racing season with a tough test as they split Friday morning racing competition against Orange Coast College. This is the second year that the two schools have met in a head-to-head regatta, matching two of the top rowing programs in the WIRA Conference.
The varsity race was a battle back and for through the opening 1,500 meters when OCC gained control and pulled ahead for a three-second victory over the Bulldogs. OCC's varsity 8+ won with a time of 7:06.43 with Gonzaga finishing at 7:09.87.
Gonzaga evened the score in the freshmen 8+ race with a seven-second win over OCC. The Bulldogs freshmen crew rowed a time of 7:22.1 with OCC finishing at 7:29.3.
Both races on the 2,000 meter course were contested into a 15 mile per hour headwind and against the tide.
Last year in Spokane, Gonzaga captured both races against OCC. Gonzaga will remain in Southern California for scrimmages on Friday afternoon against Loyola Marymount University and on Saturday against the University of San Diego.
