PULLMAN, Wash. - Gonzaga University's men's rowing streak of 16 straight Fawley Cup victories over Washington State University ended Saturday at Wawawai Landing on the Snake River.
The Cougars captured the Varsity 8 in 6:14.36 to down the Bulldogs by 4.5 seconds, Gonzaga coming home in 6:18.66.
"We knew the streak was going to end sooner or later," Gonzaga head coach Dan Gehn said. "But you always hope it won't be this year. WSU's win will make us more hungry next year to get the cup back."
Gehn was pleased with the overall performance of his team on Saturday, Gonzaga winning the other three races.
"I think the middle of the race hurt us," Gehn said of the Varsity 8 race. "I thought we hit kind of a flat spot for about 500 meters in the middle of the race. In the end, that was the difference."
The Bulldogs captured the Novice 4 in 7:11.05, the GU "A" boat edging the Bulldogs "B" entry that finished in 7:12.42 while the Cougars were a distant third in 7:55.82. Gonzaga also captured the Novice/Junior Varsity Mix 8 in 6:50.31 for an easy win over WSU that finished in 7:12.03, and GU's "A" and "B" boats ran one-two in the Frosh/Novice 8 race, the winning boat finishing in 6:21.64.
