Men's Crew Wins WIRA Petite Final

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Gonzaga University men's crew ended day two of the WIRA Championships with a successful day as the Bulldogs won the Varsity 8+ Petite Final and placed second in both Novice 8+ Grand Finals. All racing was held on Lake Natoma just outside of Sacramento.
Gonzaga's Varsity 8+ put together one of their strongest pieces of the year as they won the Petite Final by five seconds over San Diego. Gonzaga rowed a time of 5:58.3 with San Diego the closest competitor at 6:03.5. All crews racing into a head wind in the Varsity Finals. UC Santa Barbara placed third followed by UC Irvine. Sonoma State was fifth and Sacramento State sixth.
Gonzaga's first Novice 8+ earned a silver medal in their Grand Final losing by one second to Orange Coast College. OCC crossed at 5:52.1 with Gonzaga a stroke behind at 5:53.1 UC San Diego was charging hard to finish in third place at 5:55.5. The final three boats were 10 seconds behind UCSD with UC Davis fourth at 6:07.8. Long Beach State was fifth and San Diego sixth.
In the second Novice 8+ Grand Final, Gonzaga again earned a silver medal falling to Orange Coast College by four seconds. OCC was in at 6:02.8 with Gonzaga coming in second with a time of 6:06.0. UC San Diego was six seconds back of Gonzaga for third place. UC Davis was fourth followed by UC Irvine. Both Novice Grand Finals were raced with a strong tail current and no wind.
